cw pilots 2017/2018 – predictions

The CW has a long time honoured tradition of having the best TV any young woman who enjoys trash and heart could want. The lineup this year has been mostly locked up into its new role as the official home of DCTV but this is the CW and it is a requirement to us all to have the trashy cheese that we all want. Let’s break down the new series on the schedule for the CW this fall.

Monday @ 9pm – VALOR.

Per TVLine “stars Matt Barr (Sleepy Hollow) and Christina Ochoa (Animal Kingdom) as a pair of elite helicopter pilots who uncover a twisted secret about a botched mission to Somalia that left American servicemen in enemy hands.”

I won’t waste too much time with this because as an avid WB/CW viewer this will 100% get cancelled before 13 episodes and sounds completely off brand. (And this is coming from someone who rooted for their one season wonder Jack and Bobby way back when, which would totally have slayed in today’s more politically aware climate). Either way: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Do not look for this to make any movement. This should have been a series for Netflix.

Final Rating: Cancelled in less than 6 episodes – FLOP

Wednesday @ 9pm – DYNASTY.

Now you’d expect in a post Gossip Girl CW that Dynasty would fit right in with their “white people problemzz aesthetic of the CW” but this trailer footage falls extremely flat. No one expects Oscar winning acting from the CW but Liz Gilles does not have any bite as the bitchy lead. This is begging for a recast featuring the queen HBIC Annalynne McCord (previously of the 90210 reboot on the CW). I expect this show to have a trajectory of their failed Melrose Place reboot and I give it 13 – 18 episodes because I do think the network will push this property. If you are looking to be underwhelmed, peep the teaser footage below, it reeks of trying too hard:

FINAL RATING: Cancelled in 13 episodes or less – FLOP

MID SEASON – Life Sentence

I think this has the potential to have the heart and depth that Jane the Virgin does. Per Deadline “Life Sentence centers on a young woman (Hale) diagnosed with terminal cancer. When she finds out that she’s not dying after all, she has to learn to live with the choices she made when she decided to “live like she was dying.”

Hale is no stranger to the genre, though having spent the last 7 years being a pretty little liar. I think this show has the potential to last an entire season, given Hale’s strong fanbase. The preview reminds me a lot of JtV. Even if the premise sounds dated and Lifetime, the twists and turns presented in the preview show the depth and trauma that Stella’s cancer caused her family. Also you damn well know her cancer is gonna turn back up in the season one finale. I really love this preview and I think I will be covering this show when it premieres.

FINAL RATING: Youthful dramedy with popular lead actress, very on-brand, will last a full season of at least 18 episodes – FAVE

MID SEASON – Black Lightning

This  is for sure to be another winner for the CW. Per their official description “Jefferson Pierce is a man wrestling with a secret. Nine years ago, Pierce was gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, which he used to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. However, after too many nights with his life and his family on the line, he left his Super Hero days behind. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.

Judging by the preview, his daughters also get powers too. This show will be separate from the Arrowverse, I guess cause it’s filming in Atlanta and the rest of DCTV films in Vancouver so there might be logistics involved in getting a crossover organized. This show was originally developed for FOX, which passed on it and it landed on the CW. I expect it to have success like Supergirl did. This will go its full season and get renewed, I am positive. Check out the electrifying trailer below

FINAL RATING: NO BRAINER. This will definitely be renewed and eventually moved to Vancouver to be able to participate in crossovers – FAVE

My Predictions: I completely expect Valor to get canned early on and replaced by Life Sentence. Supergirl seems like a perfect lead in for Life Sentence. Dynasty will be canned and replaced by Jane the Virgin and I do think Black Lightning will debut as scheduled for mid-season to a lot of fanfare. If I had to guess, I think its lead in will be The Flash because Legends of Tomorrow tends to have very short seasons.
